Last Wednesday was kind of a national holiday of sorts for us. Josh was coming very close to home to play two baseball games. Because of the option to only drive for 30 minutes compared to the 4 hours where his college is located we took this as reason to celebrate. We kept the boys out of school, took off from work, and planned a day at the fields.
It was an exciting day to say the least. It was also chilly. Once the sun went down and we were sitting in the breezy stadium it was downright cold. Like the ever-prepared Mary Poppins I had my bag of supplies. Drinks, snacks, jackets, and even Long Johns. Yup, I packed Long Johns. And sure enough, Jakob asked for some knee warmers.
Yes, I take my child out in public in tattered clothing. I have no choice. Unless of course I choose to buy a new pair of jeans every single day. Because seriously- it only takes one day to make them look like the above photo .
Where I live in TX, it is not often that knee warmers (aka Long Johns) are needed. It is just not cold all that often. And actually my children have never owned a pair until we went to NM on vacation last December. So I guess I should have seen it coming. I didn’t realized that my 8 year old would need an explanation on how Long Johns work.
That was until he walked back into the stadium where I was sitting and handed me his jeans and happily proclaimed, “Much better!” “No Jakob, you have to put your jeans back on over the Long Johns!”
I am linking up today with Rachel and Mr. Daddy over at Once Upon a Miracle. Make sure to head on over there to read more true stories!

36 Validations To Make Me Feel Worthy:
Too funny! I wish you had a picture of your little guy in just his long john's! That would be great black mail material for later in life:) My kiddos don't own long johns. If it is ever cold enough for them here, we just use a pair of tight fitting PJ's!
Jakob is tooooo funny. Thanks for sharing this! It's one experience I haven't quite had.....
LOL!! How funny!!
Buddy does the same thing to his jeans. I can't tell you how many pairs of jeans we buy. It's always the left knee. Grr.
How awesome that you all took a day to go and watch Josh play. That sounds like some fun and the making of a great memory!
HAHAHA! Where's the picture??!! ;) That is just too cute! Oh, and y'all get the cool parents' award for ditching to go see big brother play ball!
Can you believe that my daughter is the only child I have like your Jakob? Within a day or so she can rip holes in both her knees! My two boys didn't rip holes in their knees!
And you didn't take a picture? that is too funny!!!!
I'm constantly making shorts out of my three boys' jeans. Sometimes though the holes are so big that they go immediately in the trash. We dress them with holes in their jeans as longs as they're not at school and the holes are not too big. We've had friends give us clothes because they thought we couldnt afford better clothing for our kids. Well, they're right. In a way. Well, I'm not going to not accept a free offer!
What a great day! Oh and just so you know, there's only 34 days until Astros opening day. April 5th against SF, 6:05 on ESPN2. Not that I'm keeping up with things like that. Or the fact that the first spring training game is in 2 day, 1 hour and 43 minutes.
Play ball!
HAHAHA! Too funny! That sounds like something my Makenna would do. She typically thinks that shorts and a tank top in mid-January is perfectly acceptable attire {and, ahem, we live in Oregon. Yeah.}
where is the pic!?
glad you guys got to spend some time with Josh!
Great story- I love that he came out without his jeans on. Classically funny! My boys' jeans are all like that. Unfortunately because I am a mom of young kids, I have several pair like that, too.
Don't know if I should laugh more over the criminally fast demise of the knees in jeans, or the LJs? My first was a girl and it wasn't until my two boys came a long that I appreciated how dang tough they are on clothes. They actually wear out the wales in cords!
Boy oh boys!
Too funny with the pants ...buggy boy is in first grade and I think I will go broke buying pants I too am thankful I live on the TX gulf coast and most of the year is spent in shorts because even buggy boy knows you can't rip the knees out of shorts =)
And you know those torn jeans are the thing so NO ONE thought any less of you.
Does said boy OWN anything but holy jeans?
Is there a rule I missed that says that by age 7, all boys MUST have holes in their knees?
We're almost to age 10 and still have holy jeans.
Oh that is classic. I love it. I'm guessing that they don't work as well all alone:) Too cute.
What a fun day. My hubs would have loved that. I know we don't want SM to grow up to fast, but spending days at the ball field is something we can't wait to do.
Wow, a day out of school??? Awesome! You probably just won the coolest mom of the year award!
Don't worry about your son's jeans... my favorite pair have a huge whole in the butt, and I still wear them!

Confessions From A Working Mom
My kid's jeans look that way by January. And it's COLD up here in Michigan. But I refuse to by more. But, hey, we're homeschoolers. So we're supposed to look funny, right? :)
I love how prepared you are!
Should we refer to you as Mary Poppins now?
My boys' jeans all look like that. Every pair from size 2T on up, it takes about a day for them to get holes in the knees.
That is too funny! I could see my kids doing the same thing!
That is awesome!! We do things like that here all the time. LOVE your new look and your new button!!
I so understand the jean thing. Two out of four of my sons jeans have holes. What can you do?! Sounds like you guys had a great day together!
How fun that they got to see their brother and watch him play!! And Jack's clothes totally look have multiple knee patches!
Cute!! Love it and am so jealous you have baseball weather!!
That's really so cute! And your boys are adorable.
How cool that you got to spend a fun day with all of your boys!
I know exactly what you mean about the jeans! Boys are so rough on them-they either wear them out or out grow them. I always wish that I could hand down jeans from one boy to another, but that very seldom happens. Darn it!
Imagine Jakob walking back in wearing only his skivvies(even if they were long ones)...LOLOL
We don't need them here either. It's never THAT cold!
So explain to me again, how you link up to our blog then get more comments than we do? hee hee :)
I love that he didn't know to put his jeans on over them, LOL.
And I didn't realize that baseball meant you got to play hooky... where were my parents when that rule was created??? :)
Thx for linking up chica!
Hahaha! I'm with everyone else... where's the picture? I do love the arrows in the one with the ripped jeans. My boy doesn't rip the knees, but they're so stained that they may as well be torn. Maybe we could put our heads together and come up with a replaceable-knee panel jean?
That's completely awesome! I am laughing so hard! Haha! Wow - I'm sure the people around enjoyed that little show :o)
You know girl, that sure is the truth! My fourth daughter is wearing clothes my first wore 18 years ago. My sons can't get through 1 season with a pair of jeans.
LMAO!! Stories like this make me really look forward to the day my son can walk and talk...
That is funny! Way funny! I live in Northern Canada where we wear Long Johns 9 months of the year (ok exaggerating) 8 moths...so that is a funny sight to picture.
Kids are the best EVER!
Oh, that is so funny! What can you expect from a rookie long john wearer?
I have a stack of bailey's jeans that need to have the patch PATCHED!
Oh that is so funny! LOL
That is great that you all got to go watch Josh play ball. I bet your younger boys were so excited and Josh too. That is a great picture of the three of them. :)
Ha Ha! Isn't it funny the things that you have to explain when you really didn't think that they needed explaining? You keep long johns in your purse? That's hilarious!
