Letters of Intent

Foursons

Has this week been a comedy of errors? Have you been taking care of children who got sick while waiting in a doctor’s office waiting room for a Well-Checkup? Did your first preteen crush overdose on prescription medications and leave you wondering what is going on in this world? Or…did everything go RIGHT this week? Did your luck seem so hot that you stopped at the racetrack on the way home from work? Did your numbers come up in the lottery? (If so, can you share with me?) Well tell me about it! Write the who, what, when, where, and why of it all. Grab the button from my right sidebar and link up at the bottom. I look forward to your Letters of Intent!

Dear A.R.D. Committee, (Admissions, Review, and Dismissal)

Last week I wrote this letter to you. I expressed my concerns about entering into a meeting in which I feel it is me vs. THEM. And “THEM” is the group of people who have the power to deny my son services I feel he desperately needs.

Well, I’d like to say thank you. Thank you for approving every single accommodation I asked for. I am thrilled! I have a hunch that his classroom teacher was a huge advocate for these accommodations. I am relieved that her voice has so much influence.

So it is with much gratitude that I write this letter to you today. Thank you for giving my son another school year in which he is given every opportunity to be successful to his fullest potential. Thank you that we are not settling for “good enough.” Thank you for giving him the chance to achieve greatness- even if he is only in the 2nd grade.

Sincerely,

A mom who only wants the best for her son.

Dear Audrey Niffenegger,

Congratulations on your national bestseller for you very first novel ever! The Time Traveler’s Wife has seen much success in book sales and has had quite a bit of success as a movie. You have accomplished many writer’s dream with your very first published novel. That is incredible!

I bought your book last week and started reading it. I admit, I was hooked immediately. It is a well-written, original novel that pulled me into the story as though I was right there. Normally when I read a book I will sit down and read it from beginning to end without stopping. And yes, that means I will read 300+ pages in one day. However, I read your book slowly. I wanted to absorb every word of it and even reread parts to make sure I understood what was going on. This is unusual for me, but is a testament to how well written your book is.

However…and that is a BIG however. Part II of your book left me angry and frustrated. I didn’t want to finish reading. While Part I of your book was light and pleasant, Part II was dark and dissatisfying. While I do appreciate that you made the effort to conclude the book so that there are no questions about how the character’s lives end up, I would have been much happier to just end the book after Part I. I think the only reason I actually finished The Time Traveler’s Wife was because of the time I had already invested into it. I needed to know how you chose to end the story. Unfortunately, that left me tossing the book aside glad to be done with it.

Sincerely,

A woman left wanting something better than what she got.

Dear Followers/Commenters/Lurkers,

I would love to read your letters this week. It just might make up for reading a dissatisfying book. And I PROMISE to send some comment love after work and baseball practice tonight.

Love,

Your humble leader. (Bawahahahaha)

Congrats on getting your son the accomidations he needs! Well done! Hooray for great teachers!

I'm sorry about TTW. I haven't read it, but I saw the movie, which I thought was only so-so. Come read The Witch Of Blackbird Pond with me to be discussed on my blog April 1st. The book we will be reading in april looks like it will be The Screwtape Letters, which, I guarantee will NOT be a letdown.

Glad the meeting went well! I'm finally going to do a letter I've been wanting to do for WEEKS!

A Musing Mom (Taylorclan6) said...

Yay!

I felt the same about TTW. In the end, I only gave it three stars. Maybe two.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time.

Strange little book. Strong language. Never breaks character.

I liked it.

I've been dying to read "Time Traveler's Wife", but it's always checked out at the library. Now I'm not so sure... but I'm dying to read it, nonetheless!

I heard the Time Traveler's Wife was a good book, and was hoping to read it...but your review makes it a bit less appealing. I hate when authors do that at the end of a book.

I'm so glad the meeting for Jakob went well! That's awesome news!!

I am so glad that you got everything you needed for your son in the meeting. Don't you just love Teachers that push for what is best for individual students? Awesome.
I haven't even see the Movie yet. Gosh i gotta get out of the house more.

I'm so glad to hear your meeting went well! Having a teacher on your side instead of fighting against you can make all the difference in the world. Congrats

I'm so glad the meeting went so well! Yay for teachers and moms who fight for their kids! I have a few letters I could write this week, but I don't know who all reads my blog and I don't want to cause any more trouble:)

Wooo for the board granting all of your requests! Amazing what one involved parent and advocating teacher can do for the life of one child. So happy for that!
Also, the book -- loved it! Loved the juxtaposition of the light and dark. It was really sad, though, and at some points, I wanted more than what we given. But overall, I think it was a good read.

I love the movie TTW but the book was blah. Did not finish it and I am ok with that.

Congrats on getting your son the help he needs.

I just hate when that happens with books. I've had to quit reading a few too when they get too disappointing.

That's great news about your son :)

OH YAY! So glad the meeting turned out successful! Thanks for the book review! I will be skippin' that one! Have you seen the movie? I wasn't really planning on seeing that either!

Yay for you...the best Mom ever!

And I know now not to buy that book.......

SO Glad to hear that meeting went well.
I had mixed feelings on TTW. I do think the book would have been about 1/4 shorter if they had removed the 'f' word!

I just want to stand up and applaud you for being your child's advocate. I work in a school district and know the system better than I'd like! I just want parents to be informed like you are about the rights of their kiddos! And ALL, I mean EVERY ONE of your requests was COMPLETELY warranted! Great job!

I bought a copy of The Time Traveler's Wife a few years ago and have never been able to get into it!

Margaret said...

I want to read that book but now I am not going to because I am sure I would end up disliking it like you did.

FYI... As the days go by link isn't right... it just takes me back to your page

I don't remember a BIG difference b/t the 2 parts, other than... what I think you're talking about, and THAT made me really angry too. I felt dirty, and was crossing my fingers the whole time through the movie that it wouldn't be included. Thank goodness! Made the movie great!

I totally agree w/ you on the book.

AWESOME about your son's school. That is rare, and wonderful!

I've spent the last two days speaking with my son's various teachers and therapists and it has not been a fun ride at all. I'm ready for his ARD to be over with after spring break.

You go Julie! Stick it to them! Make them get off their butts and do their jobs.

No luck - I doubt I'll be posting this weekend for your edification. {*grin*}

You could always go the the 80th birthday party for my old junior high football coach. I suspect that will be a lively party.

I'm so happy to hear someone say they got the services for the child they so desperately need!

Here's to hoping the same happens at my meeting for my son!

Messy Mommy said...

Have you seen the movie of Time Traveler's Wife? I read the book before I saw the movie and there's no way I would have understood the movie if I hadn't read the book. I had to explain to my friends what was going on.

Rachel said...

Books that leave me unsettled BUG ME! I mean, authors should know better, right? :)

Yay for IEP items getting approved! So glad your LOI worked, hee hee. (I had a mama bear who went to bat for me, I am convinced my scholastic success was 50% HER doing. Good mom you are for making sure he gets what he needs).

That's wonderful that the meeting went so well, and your son got all the accomadations you were advocating for!

I read the Time Travellers Wife a while back, and remember feeling very much like you did. I loved the first half of the book, and then forced myself to finish slogging my way through the second half. I haven't seen the movie...I'm not sure if I want to or not.
